As old saying in English goes

Wealth is gone nothing is gone

Health gone something is gone

Character is gone everything is gone.

The simple interpretation wrt to india is.

Marauder's, plunderer, looters, barbaric invasion looted the wealth of country but country is still existing and generating wealth.

Invaders start settling in and started disturbing, believes, custum, traditions, religious practices - something gone, great damage but still repairable.

But when invaders fully settled in and started changing character of country, destroying the education system of india. They striked hard at roots of idea of india, sanatana dharma - they destroyed self confidence and self respect.

This damage to character of sanatana dharma is the biggest damage.
